Depends if you are talking M4A1 75mm or 76 mm 'Wet Stowage.'
The M4A1 75mm was manufactured up to January of 1944 - by this time - the M4A3 was beginning to appear. Old M4A1's can be found throughout the campaigns in the Pacific, Italy, Tunisia and southern France. By D-Day however, the M4A3 production was in full swing and and although there might be a few M4A1's used in northern France, most were reworked models and they would be few in number.
Modifications for the M4A1 were constant - mostly engineering and ease of production applications. When it was decided to put the 76mm in the old M4A1's, a new turret had to be built to adequately house the bigger gun. The M4A1's with the 76mm also had additional armor placed on the upper front in most instances.
Perhaps others might have more specific info as to actual allotments to specific units, but for all intents and purposes, the M4A3 75mm and 76mm would be the more prevalent vehicle.
