Scratch-built ACV
Last week I built a 1/76 scale ACV from the plans in the Airfix magazine Guide
Afrika Korps
. The plans were generally very good. I did not use the Matador chassis but I found an old RoCo truck chassis of unknown nature and cut it down. I did use the Scammell trailer wheels as suggested in the guide.
Next steps: apply decals and a dirt wash. _________________ Daniel

Very nice work, Daniel! Perhaps your best scratchbuild yet.

You're very kind. perhaps it's that i figured out how to reduce the size of my photos, so now the glitches don't show up as readily.
Sometime next week I hope to post the final product with markings and lots of dirt. _________________ Daniel

Its enough to inspire even the most thumb-fingered of us to try something... or maybe not... is ACV Armoured Command Vehicle? How were these used?

ACV- Yes: Armoured Command Vehicles, They were used to make sure radios and staff were not disabled by the first stray shell.
Now used even at brigade level- perhaps even lower? _________________ Best regards

Jack, There were three ACV's in the Armoured Division's HQ and usually one in the Brigade HQ. Then there were the three from 2nd Armoured Division which the Germans captured and used ! _________________ Alan

And the Germans took plenty of photos of them under new management, too:
Germans would have used the famous "jerry cans" and the British their equally infamous "flimsies" _________________ Best regards

An ideal compromise using a barrel for fuel
I had resisted making an ACV because I could not think of a CD-level tactical situation in which they would be used - except maybe the capture of O'Connor and Neame - not a very exciting battle.
Then along came Bob's scenario on the end of Battleaxe and there it is as the command vehicle for the 7th Support Group. And of course I had been looking at those great plans in the Airfix book since 1980 or so. Finally, a reason to succumb!
As for the barrel on the roof -- I couldn't resist, even though it would be a pain to get a full barrel on the roof. Just having 40-50 unused barrels from the Japanese aircraft refueling truck lying around - finally, a use for one! Maybe it's full of water. _________________ Daniel

Probably water. If it was gasoline, it would be a real nuisance if the vehicle came under fire. If it was gin, it would be kept INSIDE the vehicle for the same reason. Has to be water.

I briefly considered gin and decided nothing so valuable would be kept on the roof. _________________ Daniel

The ACV has now been weathered and has decals applied.
